General Remarks

Prof. Yuji NAKASONE

Materials which are used as structural components of an airplane, pressure vessels and radiators of nuclear reactor/FBR(Fast Breeder Reactor) and the first wall of Fusion Reactors, are subjected to both severe loading and enviromental conditions, and so plastic strain and creep strain may occur locally depending on scall and shape of them. Also thoughts on energy and resorces saving demond much severe calculations in these designs.
In this laboratory of mechanics of solids, replying to these demond, various metals, ceramics, polymers and these combinations of which various constructions are composed, are investigated on these deformation, strength properties and also on bond strength between them experimentally and analytically. Obtained results are ystematized usefully in applying to practical strength designs and to confirmity of safty reliability of various structures.
Without pricise informations on materials' properties, no reliable result can be obtained even if a super computer and a recise program are used.
In this laboratory, many updated facilities as well as multiaxial stress testing system and unique thermal fatigue testing system are available to investigate various materials' properties under various practical loading conditions.
