Pumping Characteristics of a Herringbone-Grooved Gas Journal Bearing
Functioning as a Viscous Vacuum Pump

In this paper we propose a newly developed laser scanner motor for high-speed rotation with low power consumption. This scanner motor uses a herringbone grooved journal bearing functioning as a viscous vacuum pump. Since the air inside of the housing is pumped out by herringbone grooved vis-cous vacuum pumps, the windage power loss of a polygon mirror can be reduced. Various perfor-mances of the proposed laser scanner motor are measured. It was consequently found that the pro-posed scanner motor had much lower power consumption and higher scanning accuracy of a laser beam than the conventional scanner motor of which the rotor was rotated in the air.
