Learning about life Well-rounded knowledge

An essential field in sciences

A laboratory class in progressA laboratory class in progress

Why is biology taught within the category of liberal arts?
The aim of biology classes is to enrich general knowledge necessary for natural sciences and to build the basis of learning and research in the majors provided by the Faculty of Science. Biology is a compulsory subject for getting a science teacherfs certificate.
What areas of research do staff work in?
The research interests of full-time staff are as follows.

Is it possible to go on to do research on living organisms?
Our laboratory accepts undergraduate students majoring in chemistry in the Faculty of Science. For details, please contact the staff in charge. Although there is no biology department in our Faculty, several laboratories of some departments do research related to living organisms. We therefore recommend taking biology classes if you wish to proceed in these directions.
I did not study biology at high school and am worried that I might not be able to keep up with class.
Donft worry. The basics to be taught at high school will be provided in the introductory sessions, after which classes will go on to more advanced topics.
Do I have to take biology classes to graduate?
Biology subjects are specialty-related basic subjects classified as partly compulsory. The Biological Experiment class is one of the teacher-training-program subjects.
Please explain about the experiment class in molecular biology.
This is a new subject available from the 2009 academic year, and taught intensively at the beginning of the summer vacation. This class consists of practical training in sampling and amplification of onefs own DNA, genetic modification of Escherichia coli, refinement of luminous protein, bioinformatics, and so on. Take this subject to get a taste of the latest in biotechnology.
